Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool from Google that lets you check how your website is performing in search engines. It lets you see, among other things, what keywords your website is ranking for, which pages are visible in Google, and whether there are any technical errors. But to access all this data, you first need to add your website to the site. How do you do that?

Step 1: Go to Google Search Console

  1. Open your browser and go to: https://search.google.com/search-console
  2. Log in to the Google account you’d like to use to manage your website. This can be your business Gmail account or any other account.

Step 2: Add your website

After logging in, you’ll see a screen labeled “Add a service.”

You have two options:

  • Domain – tracks the entire website, including subdomains (e.g., blog.yourwebsite.com).
  • URL Prefix – tracks only a specific address, e.g., https://yourwebsite.com.

For beginners, we recommend “URL Prefix.” It’s easier to verify.

Enter the exact address of your website, e.g.:
https://yourwebsite.com (be sure to include https:// if your website uses SSL)
and click “Next.”

Step 3: Verify that you are the owner of the page

Google needs to know that this page actually belongs to you. You have several verification options – here are the simplest:

1. Verification via HTML file

  1. Download the HTML file that Google will display.
  2. Log in to your hosting provider (e.g., cPanel or your client panel).
  3. Upload this file to your website’s root directory—where your index.html or index.php file is located.
  4. Return to GSC and click “Verify.”

That’s it. If the file is there, Google will find it and recognize you as the owner of the page.

2. Verification via HTML tag (e.g. in WordPress, the most recommended option!)

If you have a WordPress site:

  1. Copy the HTML tag that Google provides (looks like a meta tag <meta name=”google-site-verification” …>).
  2. Go to your WordPress dashboard.
  3. Install a plugin like “Insert Headers and Footers”: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-headers-and-footers/
  4. In the plugin settings, paste this code in the appropriate place (Scripts in Headers field).
  5. Save your changes and return to GSC to click “Verify“.

Step 4: Done! Now what?

Your website has been added to GSC. From now on, Google will collect data about:

  • keywords you appear for in results,
  • indexing errors,
  • pages that don’t work properly,
  • links pointing to your website,
  • page performance on smartphones.

Remember: data appears after a few days, so it’s worth checking regularly.

❗ Worth remembering!

Google Search Console isn’t just a “techie tool.” It’s your window into how Google sees your website. Even if you’re just starting out, take a moment to configure it. It’s one of the easiest ways to start consciously working on your website’s online visibility.

Adding your website to Google Search Console is a simple yet crucial step if you want to consciously improve your search engine visibility. GSC is a tool that shows you how Google sees your website: what keywords are ranking it, where errors occur, and what you can improve. Even if you're just starting out, it's worth taking a few minutes to access this data and better understand what influences your site's ranking in search results.
