What is the difference between local and national SEO?
Wondering whether your company should focus on local SEO or strive for visibility across Poland? It's not just a matter of reach. These are two different approaches, different strategies, different keywords, and different goals. In this article, we'll show you exactly how local SEO differs from national SEO, how to choose the right path, and what might make the most sense for your business.

What is local SEO anyway?
Local SEO involves activities designed to ensure your company appears high in Google results when someone searches for a service in a given city or region. You’re not competing for the attention of all of Poland. You want to be visible to people in the area. It’s a great solution for, for example:
- beauty salons,
- dental offices,
- renovation companies,
- restaurants,
- local shops,
- and all service providers operating in one or more cities.
Typical phrases sought here include:
- hairdresser Krakow,
- law firm Poznań,
- computer service Wrocław,
- pizza delivery Białystok.
Location context is key here. Google aims to show users the closest and most relevant businesses that are available “here and now.”
What is nationwide positioning?
This is a more challenging task. Nationwide SEO means you want to be visible regardless of user location. This applies to e-commerce, consulting firms, SaaS brands, online platforms, courses, and mail-order stores. The goal: to rank high for general phrases like:
- website SEO,
- wooden furniture,
- invoicing software,
- online dietitian,
- SEO course for beginners.
The competition here is much higher, as you’re competing with companies from all over Poland (and often even beyond). To make a name for yourself here, you need to really refine your content, link building, technical SEO, and content strategy. But the results – with good optimization – can be enormous.
Key differences between local and national SEO
1. Different user intent
In local SEO, users are often looking for something immediate: a hairdresser, a dentist, a service. They enter a city, a neighborhood, or simply use Google Maps. Nationwide SEO is more often about research – comparisons, education, online shopping.
2. Google My Business Plays a Key Role
In local SEO, a Google Business Profile listing is an absolute must. It appears in maps and local search results, is responsible for reviews, and provides directions to the business. Without it, nothing will happen. In the case of nationwide SEO, a listing often has little significance.
3. Types of keywords
Local SEO often involves keywords with the name of a city or region – so-called location-specific keywords. National SEO targets general queries without a specific location – and you have to be really good at this to stand out.
4. Less competition vs. larger scale
Lokalnie konkurujesz zwykle z kilkudziesięcioma firmami z okolicy. Ogólnokrajowo – z setkami, jeśli nie tysiącami. Łatwiej wejść w TOP3 na frazę notariusz Żoliborz, niż na notariusz online.
5. Diverse Content Strategy
Specific city-specific pages, blog posts with regional keywords, and local case studies work well in local SEO. In national SEO, you need to build a strong thematic structure, often based on topical authority, meaning being an expert in a given niche.
When should you focus on local SEO?
If you operate in a single city or region, have a physical location, and offer local services, local SEO is a great option. You don’t need a huge budget to see results. All you need is a well-optimized website, a solid Google listing, and a basic content strategy.
And when is it better to go nationwide?
If you sell online, offer services regardless of location, or want to build significant brand recognition, you need a nationwide approach. This is a more challenging path, but it also offers greater reach. For many companies, it’s the natural next step after local SEO success.
Is it possible to combine one with the other?
Yes! More and more companies are adopting a hybrid SEO model – starting with local SEO and then expanding their reach. You can have a strong homepage optimized for a general phrase (e.g., “marketing training”), while simultaneously creating local subpages like “marketing training Katowice,” “marketing training Gdańsk,” and so on.
This is a very effective approach – Google recognizes that you’re active in a given area and strengthens your position where users need you.
❗ Worth remembering!
Local SEO works best for service companies and businesses operating in one city or region, where presence on Google Maps and customer reviews are key.
Local and national SEO differ not only in scale but also in their overall approach. Local SEO focuses on map presence, reviews, and keywords related to the city. National SEO focuses on content, links, and authority. This doesn’t mean one is better than the other. It’s important to choose a strategy tailored to what you do and where your customers are.
If you’re a plumber in Toruń, you don’t need nationwide visibility. But if you’re selling online courses, localization doesn’t matter. It’s always worth starting with the question: who do I want to reach and where are they looking for me?
